My name is Jan Houtsma and I live in Hilversum, the Netherlands, which is about 15 miles from Amsterdam.
I am married to Caroline and we have three kids Ramon, Tamara and Camilla.
And now what you probably really came for....
In 2002 i've been travelling to Poland a lot for Alcatel-Lucent to support TPSA telecom company. During the weekends i also had some time for site seeing. On saturday i travelled to Oswiecim, better known as Auschwitz, the camp that became the site of the greatest mass murder in the history of humanity, which was committed against the European Jews as part of Hitler's plan for the complete destruction of that people. It was an impressive visit! For the photos i made in Warsaw and Auschwitz please click here.
Currently i work in ICT as a Network Consultant at DeLorentz & Partners in Hilversum, which is about 2 miles from home. My main areas of expertice are IP switching and routing protocols (CCNP) including security, Cisco, Nortel, SDH, the OSI protocol stack, CMISE, Add/Drop multiplexers and timing management (synchronization of the telecommunications network). I have a lot of experience in complex network migration projects. For more information, including my CV, please visit my LinkedIn profile. If you don't understand a single bit of what this all means, it's all about routing voice and data traffic on the internet via very high speed transmission channels like for example optical fibers. For those interested, i have also worked quite some time as a software developer and network consultant for Bell Laboratories (which currently is part of Alcatel-Lucent). After working in software development for over 12 years, i left that department in 2001 to work more closely with customers for a customer support organization called Network Integration Services (NIS). For that group i was technically responsible for external customers of Alcatel-Lucent who bought our equipment.
My main hobbies are Biking, Squash and Inline Skating. At this moment bikeracing has my preference. I am a member of a racing bike club called "de Adelaar" in Hilversum, the Netherlands. Almost every weekend we tour around the country for at least 100 kilometers (about 60 miles), sometimes even 150 kilometers (100 miles) or more. In the winter my trainings are indoor only (spinning). Currently i own a Koga Miyata - RoadWinner racing bike. Sometimes, on Friday Nights i also go skating (on wheels) in Amsterdam. This is a lot of fun and it's very special with all the pretty lights in Amsterdam when it's dark. We start at the Vondelpark at 8:30pm. To get an impression you can download this FNS screensaver which i compiled from some photos. Or have a look on the following inline-skate websites which are loaded with pictures as well:

And then there is my virtual life on the internet. Although i hardly have any time for this anymore you can occasionally find me in Melrose Place to meet some old friends. This chat was once raised by Adam Curry. However a better way to contact me quickly is via Twitter or e-mail.
